NDIS.sys - BSoD - Strange problem
I offer a compute repair service in my local area. Most faults are simple to diagnose - others are a real pain. Yesterday I came up with a situation that I nearly didn’t solve.
The computer itself worked fine - no issues other than a bit slow (most people that I tend to visit do have slow computers). The issue came about as soon as the router was turned on to get internet access. within a couple of seconds of turning the router on the computer restarted.
When I first received the call I assumed that most likely it was a power supply issue, the router was connected via USB and therefore when turned on could be putting a drain on a dodgy supply. This was not the case.
The first thing I did was to untick automatically restart box in the startup and recovery section. Turning on the router again the problem immediately occurered except for this time I got the Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) with an error message pointing to the NDIS.sys file.
I then disabled all start up items from the computer and tried again, same thing - within a few seconds the computer gave the BSoD error.
I thne changed the router to use the standard ethernet cavle - within moments the same error message. I was at this point thinking that maybe the router was at fault.
Plugged the router into my laptop and bingo - all was working fine so it was not the router.
The computer system being used was an XP machine with service pack 2. All seemed completely normal with the machine until I plugged the router in.
Narrowing the problem down, checking on forums, there was definitely some kind of network issue going on with this machine. Every time I tried a new thing, the computer would give the BSoD error and I would have to wait ages for the machine to reboot back up again. Not too impressive.
At the point of finally giving up and going for afull reformat and restore I decided to uninstall AVG insternet security. Also at the same time I noticed AVG spyware protection was there. I removed both.
This solved the issue - quite how or why the computer didn’t like AVG so much I do not know - I assume perhaps a corrumpetd update or something as resinstalling the software, the computer works great.
If you have a similar issue yourself then I would reccomend that you remove any programs that run with your computer. Bear in mind that I disabled AVG from the startup - the error still occurred without AVG running. Only a total uninstall solved it.
I would liek to point out that I certainly have nothing against AVG whatsoever. I think its a gret piece of software and I personally use their virus protection on my home machines.

I am currently receiving the NDIS.sys bluescreen whenever I type my password into the login. I originally thought it was something to do with my video card displaying, (nvidia-display.sys shortened) but after googling around alot I have come to the conclusion that its a network issue.
Going into safe mode is fine, unless I use the “with networking” option.
I’m not too sure what it could be, I didnt update anything when I suddenly got the error its come out of the blue.
I will try uninstalling AVG to see if that fixes the issue, if not I will continue googling
*by the way I found this via google*

I am constantly having these… Before that I had tcpip.sys BSoDs…
I switched from AV to Avast. Did not solve my problem tho. I am currently looking for a new Firewall (using COMODO atm).
I reinstalled my vista today in hopes it would help, but it did not.
*sigh*
Maybe its my RAM. I don’t know, but I will keep on trying…

I have had lots of trouble ever since I installed AVG. I thought it was a good idea, it had lots of positive reviews, but it has been a huge pain. I will uninstall it…. thanks for the tip.

Is the problem so critical with AVG? I used to have some system failures, and I wonder if this was it’s fault.

I have run into problems with security software in the past 2. They tend to over extend that which they should do, in the name of providing you with security. This can create all kinds of conflicts and problems. But is seems like you spotted this one well.

I had this problem on a rebuilt virus killed pc… reloaded 4 or 5x, + flashed the bios, removed the reinstall partition…etc, but everytime the same problem, connect a wireless card or network cable and BSOD apparantly because of ndis.sys… the dump file though said it was avg files…. removed avg and I have internet access and no BSOD….. its the bought version, on the same licence on the same pc as the original setup that died which allowed the virus through in the first place! mmmm ? why I’m surpised now ?!!!!!

I liked the reference to the “blue screen of death.” It reminded me of a board game called Arkham Horror where rise of Cthulu automatically wipes out the players because of its immense demoralizing power. Good post…glad to know that you “powered” through it.

I have a couple of desktops in my home office and I had AVG Internet Security on one computer but it really sucks up a lot of the computer’s resources–a snails pace, horribly slow. Applications took forever to launch; web access crawls. I thought I’d perform the necessary cleanups: you know, deleting unused and temp files and cleaned the registry. Defragging the hard drive didn’t help either. And you know what did? I uninstalled the program and the PC runs like I just took it out of the box. I’ve got McAfee on it now, a little improvement.

I used avg for a year then found it did not take care of some problems and actulay caused more on my computer. Had to do restore back to original compouter settings and use another spyware program and it works alot better now no problems at all.

Hey guys, recently I started getting NDIS.sys blue screen errors. After doing some research I’ve found that its something network related but I honestly don’t know for sure what it is and what it does. What I do know is this error stuck around even after a fresh reinstall of Windows XP 64 and there is no single way for me to cause the system to crash. 640-460 What I do know what happens is that it crashes while I’m running internet apps, but I have no way of knowing when it will do it. Sometimes it occurs overnight with my system sitting on AIM, other times it happens when I’m playing a game online or surfing the web, this mourning I woke up and my computer was completely turned off, I have no idea how that one happened. 1z0-007 Usually it takes a few hours after a restart to crash on me sometimes it goes a day or two without the error. Members of another forum suggested that it could be the ram. I ran a Ram testing application, I ran the test on both sticks one at a time and no errors occurred.

Strange problem you are facing… I too facing some problem with my laptop because whenever i trying to install any new software i am unable to do it.

I used last year AVG too. I was uninstall it because it was slowing my system. My router is an D-link and never had problems with it even when I used AVG. Maybe the NDIS.sys error occurs in a combination with some routers. What router are using your client?
